RESUMO

The food industry and the frozen fish sector in particular have benefitted greatly from advancements in food processing technologies. This study investigated the effect of adding natural antioxidants such as rosemary and thyme oil to frozen fillets of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in order to preserve their quality for consumers. Fillets were treated with rosemary and thyme at two concentrations (1% and 1.5%) and then were stored at 4°C. Samples were analyzed over 4 days for bacteriological (aerobic plate count, psychotropic count, and coliform count), chemical (determination of pH, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances-TBARS, and total volatile base nitrogen-TVB-N), and sensory quality examination (color, texture, and odor). Significant differences (P<0.05) were observed among different groups in terms of aerobic plate count, psychotropic count, and coliform count during the storage. Moreover, pH, TVB-N, and TBARS mean values in the treated groups were lower than those in the untreated group. The best sensory quality was obtained at the highest concentrations (1.5%) of thyme and rosemary oil.(AU)

This study included 22 patients, all of whom had the diagnosis of congenital hip dislocation. There was 18 girls and 4 boys with a total of 28 hips. Operative procedures included open reduction and capsulorrhaphy [27 hips], Salter osteotomy [12 hips] and femoral osteotomy [6 hips]. Operations were performed at the average age of 1.9 years. All scanning was done through the spica cast, no anaethesia or sedation was required. Infants were taken to the CT suite 24-48 hours after operation. All scans were performed by a schimadzu 3000 CT scanner with 5-mm slice depth, 4.5-sec. scan time and 1024 X 1024 matrix. Cuts were made through the superior acetabular margin the triradiate cartilage and the inferior portion of the acetabulum. A total of 35 scans were performed, Persistent posterior subluxation or dislocation of the femoral head was detected on the CT scan in 5 hips that necessitated repositioning within the cast [2 hips] and repeat open reduction [3 hips]. Plain radiographs failed to discover such malposition in the transvere plane. We concluded that postoperative evaluation of CDH should not depend only on plain X-rays, CT scanning should also be included

RESUMO

Between 1983 and 1987, we have treated 45 cases of osteogenesis imperfecta in the New Children's Hospital, Cairo University. The youngest patient was one week old and the oldest was 12 years old. 15 patients presented with acute fractures of their long bones and were treated by light and functional bracing. 35 patients had deformities of the limbs and trunk; the most frequent was anterolateral bowing of the femur. Multiple osteotomies, realignment and nonelongating intramedullary rodding was performed in 20 patients. All bones united and there was no infection. Few hardware complications were encountered. Certain anaesthetic difficulties were reported in OI patients

RESUMO

We treated forty-one cases of fracture of the shaft of the humerus with a functional brace consisting of a plaster of- Paris sleeve, that followed an initial peroid of immobilisation in a hanging cast [Average two weeks]. The average time to union was 10 weeks for closed fractures and 13 weeks for open fractures. 90% [37 patients] healed their fractures with less than 8° of varus or valgus angulation and [35% patients] healed with less than 8° of anterior or posterior angulations. Shortening, as-evaluated radiologically, was a mean of 1/2 centimeter. There were very minimal complications; one patient had a non- union, one had skin maceration and two elderly patients had transient inferior subluxalion of the shoulder. All patients had good functional results at follow- up with near normal ranges of elbow and shoulder motion. Because of the low morbidity and high rate of success, we concluded that functional bracing is the treatment of choice for diaphyseal fractures of the humerus
